We are meeting at Sally & Bill’s house so she can ‘show off’ how much she gets INTO this celebration! General meeting at Sally & Bill Knight’s house: DIRECTIONS: From Sheridan Lake Rd: head like you are going to the lake. Look for the Corner Pantry convenience store and turn left. Now you are on Dunsmore Road. Turn right on the very first street---this is Kerry Drive. We live on 3364 Kerry. Ignore the addresses, it's awful. Look for a log cabin style house to the left. A basset hound will probably greet you. We will try to have signs out. From Highway 16 by the water slides---head like you are going to the hills (south) on hwy 16. Look for Moon Meadows Rd---it will be on the right. There isn't a good land mark, but if you go past reptile gardens, you've gone too far. Turn right on Moon Meadows from hwy 16 and go all the way to the end - about 1.5 miles. When you are at the end, you will see a Corner Pantry convenience store to the right. Turn left. Now you are on Dunsmore Rd. Turn right on the very first street--this is Kerry dr. Look for a log cabin style house--3364 Kerry.  Lost? Call 343-2884. Hope to see all of you there!!! As Christmas approaches and we ready ourselves for the Robert Burns and St Patrick Day dinner events, we may need some new ‘duds’ or ‘gadgets’! Hence the idea to share with each other what sources thas have turned out to be quality places to buy Celtic merchandise. Bring your catalogs, web-site addresses, samples of the merchandise itself to share with fellow members. We invite everyone to bring their favorite catalogs or web-sites along with some sample purchases they’ve made to share. We hope to add some of these proven ‘quality’ vendors added to our website or newsletter. Speaking of quality merchandise and websites, Coleen Coble, past member of the S.I.S., started a Celtic Shop in Dunedin, FL after leaving Rapid City last year. She has recently completed her web site. Check it out: http://celticshopdunedin.com. With chilly evenings come SIS preparations for our winter events. Of anything that we do, Hogmanay, Robert Burns Dinner and St Patrick’s Ceilidh seem to generate the most membership participation. They are grand events that allow us to truly socialize with one another. I suppose that Hogmanay (Celtic New Year) is my favorite. Last year’s public Hogmanay at the Civic Center was a first for us. This year we plan to return to our signature “house party”. We will again have a member’s and guest’s party at a home. It will be crowded but warm. It is a chance to visit and become better acquainted with one another. We will select a date for the party at the next membership meeting. I hope that you will put it on your calendar. My final thought for this month; we are organizing our nominating committee for the board of officers for 2007. The new board will take office on January 27 at our Robert Burns Birthday Dinner. We will have several new openings on the board. Whether you are a long time member or new to the organization I hope that you will consider serving. Generally speaking, it does not require much time. We meet one time a month in addition to the general membership meeting. In case you were wondering, the Dakota Celtic Festival Gathering of the Clans is not run by the SIS board. It is a lot of work. The festival is run by a larger, community wide organization which meets separately from the SIS board. I hope that you can help us by serving on the SIS board of directors in 2007. Gary Hamilton Sorry, no article this month. As a thank you gift for the many years of faithful service to the Scottish and Irish Society playing his bag pipes at many of our events for little or no reimbursement, the S.I.S. gave him a a MP-3 player. This will allow him to store tons of music for his enjoyment while serving Uncle Sam in the National Guard in Afghanistan. He wrote the following thank you note for all members: “Your generosity leaves me speechless! Getting paid for having fun, for there is nothing I enjoy better than making music, leaves me felling like a bit of a bandit. It is tru I oft times charge for my service (although sometimes it seems it is forece upo0n some people who would rather not hear it; as it the case with all pipers I suppose!); but I have made so many friends in the Socieity for whom it has been a pleasure to play that I consider all debts payed in full. Not only that but the hospitality I receive from both the Lemays and the Hamiltons made me wish that I had more to offer. So with the news of the MP-3 player on top of all of this, I couldln’t help feeling a little spoiled. Thankyou all so much! Slancha agus benacht Dea,” John Savery He has some training prior to his actual departure later this fall. He can be reached via e-mail at john.savery@us.army.mil . We are co-sponsoring a Samhain Celebration with the Celts of America at Dublin Square Pub (in the Radisson Hotel) on October 28 at 7:00 pm. This will be a pitch-in (potluck) and beverages will be available from the pub. Please bring a pub snack to share. Guests are welcome. We will start with a mixer followed by a short presentation on the history and the traditions of the Celtic End of Summer Celebration which we now call Halloween. Dress in your finest Celtic attire or wear a Halloween costume. There will be costume judging. Darren Williams will be piping. The pub will sponsor a band at 9:00. Sally Knight is working on a third S.I.S. cookbook and is soliciting recipes (include any family stories that might go along with them). Please dig in your kitchens & corners and share your Celtic recipes with Sally. We’ll try to highlight some titles in future newsletters. Your Input Needed This newsletter would be far more interesting with your input: news, events, culture, history, photos, new Celtic businesses, anything. Submit your articles in MS Word doc and photos in jpg format. E-mail to info@BlackHillsCelticEvents.org . We welcome any Scottish or Irish trivia from any member. Please submit your thoughts to Info@BlackHillsCelticEvents.org or contact Pat Hamilton, newsletter editor. Thanks to Dan Black & Mike Lemay! Dan provided lots of photos from the Festival to Mike Lemay, who compiled a photo CD of this past Labor Day’s Festival for promotion for next year. Colcannon: Many of our members and friends enjoyed their wonderful concert at the Elks on September 30th. The group came back with 2 songs for a encore. What a pleasant way to spend the evening! Men of Worth: What does our own member “Paul Smith” have to do with Men of Worth? Paul has done some singing with Men of Worth! I think that’s worthy of a few more details over a pint! Ask Paul for detail next time you see him. Geneaology The genealogy association meets every 3rd Friday of each month at the Canyon Lake Senior Citizen’s Club. Contact Nila Boone if you have any questions. The Sons of Norway host dancing lessons at the Canyon Lake Senior Citizens’ Center each Monday evening at 6:30 starting in November. We’re learning some Norwegian dances and are preparing to learn some Celtic dances. Call John or Nancy Burke if you’re interested in attending as their summer schedule may vary a bit. This meeting took place in Sundance, WY at Kerry & Pat Smith’s house. They were VERY gracious hosts and the ‘pitch-in’ (pot luck) had everyone leaving with leftover samples for their future enjoyment!
