FESTIVAL DEBT – GONE!
Last month I promised to list the names of individuals and businesses that helped us out of last year’s festival debt with loans or donations. Here it is in random order from our treasury accounting report: Robert Millican, Rapid Tax Service (Carole Conrad), Cheryl Lemley, Aliyah Sanders, Gram and Alma Chesnut, Tim Moss, Nila Boone, James Marrs, Pat and Gary Hamilton, John and Nancy Burke, Bill and Sally Knight, Kerry Smith, Jim Byrne, Mark Renken (Athletics Judge) and Kirk Spell (Athletics Director).
These people did this to support us, not for their own self aggrandizements. Some of these persons represent businesses who forgave legitimate bills against the festival. We received one private donation for $1500! We all owe them our gratitude.
I also wanted you to realize the level of help that we have received from others. Mike and Holly Lemay (String Thaw) have been especially helpful finding us new opportunities to participate in other fund raising events in our community. They were instrumental in securing our place as a co-sponsor of the New Years Eve Hogmanay last year. We raised $700 that night. Also a big help that evening was the Civic Center Catering Staff. Through ticket sales for the symphony they were able to predict that the Hogmanay would be well attended. They strongly advised us, to more than double our original catering order. We did and it paid off.
Of course, I must mention, and thank, all of our friends and members who helped with the work of old fashioned fund raising at our events. It all helped us out of our debt.
It is always easier to come through crises with the help of good friends. Be sure to thank them.
From here we move forward. I promise you that the Festival Board is NOT headed toward debt again. We are only spending money that we have. The Dakota Clan Gathering will be supported by clan fees, vendor fees, sponsorships and donations.
Gary Hamilton
Thanks to Jim Byrne for this contribution from an article by Seamus Boyle in the A.O.H. newspaper:
HEMOCHROMATOSIS!
It is a genetic disorder in which the body absorbs excessive iron from the diet. The iron is then deposited in various organs within the body such as the liver, pancreas, endocrine glands and joints.
Symptoms may include one of more of the following:
1. Chronic fatigue
2. Impotence
3. Arthritis
4. Liver disorders
5. Diabetes
6. Cardiomyopathy
7. Abdominal pain
8. Bronzing of the skin
Diagnosis: a simple blood test called ‘Serum Iron Profile’. This tests the transferring saturation and serum ferretin levels.
Treatment: it is most effective when begun early. The only method of removing excess iron from the body is by removal of blood, venesection or phlebotomy. Phlebotomy is performed over a period of time. When the iron levels are back to normal they are monitored every three months.
Occurrence: one in every five Irish people are carriers of this genetic disorder. It is only lately that this disorder has come to the attention of the medical field as being prevalent in Irish people.
Your Input Needed
This newsletter would be far more interesting with your input: news, events, culture, history, photos, new Celtic businesses, anything. Submit your articles in MS Word doc and photos in jpg format. E-mail to info@BlackHillsCelticEvents.org .

I’m working on it – REALLY!
For some I’ve got bio’s but no photo!
For others, I have photos – but not bio’s!
SO what fun is THAT!
I’ll work on merging the photos AND the bio’s for next issue!
IRISH COFFEE: According to Alex Levine, "Only Irish Coffee provides in a single glass all four essential food groups: alcohol, caffeine, sugar, fat." : ) ------------- thanks to Janice Murraine for this tidbit! -----------------

Festival Planning Meeting
The Dakota Celtic Festival will be called the Dakota Clan Gathering. This is to reflect the more cultural, arts and educational focus of this year’s event. It will be held at Memorial Park. We have most of our committee chairs appointed and are well into budgeting. Solicitations have been sent to for vendors. The advertising campaign is in motion.
We are soliciting donations and sponsorships. If any of you have connections with an organization or business that might help support this event, please contact a board member or email info@BlackHillsCelticEvents.org Participating businesses and organizations will be credited in various ways through our public ad campaign.
Contributions are tax deductible.
Exchange Club Convention Ceilidh – April 28
Thanks go to Carole Conrad, Jim Marrs, Matt Murraine and Christine, Jim Byrne, and Pat and Gary Hamilton for helping to entertain at the District Convention of the National Exchange club on April 28. Everyone showed up dressed in their Celtic finery to show off at the Ceilidh. Suzanne Karl played the bag pipes. String Thaw provided music. Suzanne presented a fascinating talk on the history, construction and playing techniques for the pipes. The afore mentioned crowd presented a fashion show for the audience. They explained the origins and styles of the various tartans and articles of clothing. The Exchange Club audience was tremendous. They clapped wildly and offered lavish compliments after the show. Thanks to all who helped.
Budget
Last month’s President’s message was about budget planning. Carole Conrad has volunteered to chair a Budget planning committee for fiscal year beginning July 1, 2006. You can help!
Budget preparation demands planning a calendar. All of us need to make suggestions, perhaps demands, about what should be on our calendar for the next 12 to 18 months. From the calendar come expenses, from expenses come plans for creating income.
Consider helping Carole with this project. That way we can adopt a Calendar and Budget that we can support as a group.
Geneaology
The genealogy association meets every 3rd Friday of each month at the Canyon Lake Senior Citizen’s Club. Contact Nila Boone if you have any questions.

Follow-up On Granite Faces Bonspiel
Well, if you missed the Bonspiel
on May 5-7 you passed up a chance to see an
unusual event. Jim Byrne, Pat and Gary
Hamilton and friends took turns playing three curling team matches as the SIS team. Everyone who played had good time learning to slide and sweep.
Doug Cragun and Gary Hamilton helped out at the concession stand for a shift each.
The SIS curling team record was 0-1-2. But, it was fun. The Rushmore Curling Club has invited back again next year. Let’s put together another team and get a few more of you involved!

The Sons of Norway host dancing lessons at the Canyon Lake Senior Citizens’ Center each Monday evening at 6:30. We’re learning some Norwegian dances and are preparing to learn some Celtic dances.
